Can stress cause hair loss?

Can stress cause hair loss?

Short answer: yes. Significant physical or emotional stress can push an unusually large number of hair follicles into their shedding phase at once, a condition called telogen effluvium, typically noticeable two to three months after the stressful event.

What counts as stress for hair
Major illness, surgery or high fever. Childbirth. Sudden weight loss or crash dieting. Prolonged emotional stress such as grief, job loss or relationship strain.

How to tell if it is stress related
Stress shedding is usually diffuse, spread evenly across the scalp rather than patchy, and traces back to a specific stressful period two to three months earlier. It is also typically temporary and self-resolving once the stress passes.

What actually helps
Addressing the underlying stressor where possible, adaptogens such as ashwagandha studied for cortisol regulation, foundational nutrition to support regrowth during recovery, and basic sleep and stress-management practices.

Telogen effluvium typically resolves within six to nine months once the trigger is removed.
